K. John Wei

C-Founder, NC China Center

John Wei was born in Taiwan but has become a well-known Chinese-American leader.  John and wife Shue first achieved success in Taiwan in the seventies, with John working as a school teacher and eventually establishing a private school, whose students went on to worldwide success and high political office in Taiwan.

John traded his early prosperity to pursue “the American dream.”  He and his wife, Shue, came to Penn State University on full scholarships in 1978 as graduate students.  After graduation, the pair moved to the Carolinas and John held a series of jobs at a software development company, Carolina Power & Light, and IBM.  After retiring from the last post, Wei has served as a senior software analyst at the Office of State Personnel in the North Carolina State Government. He’ll be qualified for second retirement soon.

John Wei has been a leader in the business community for several decades, operating a family-owned real estate brokerage business, R.D. International, Inc., for nearly 20 years.  They also own and manage more than a dozen apartment buildings and houses.  John also serves on the Western Wake Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank.  He was appointed by Governor Easley to the Board of Governors of the NC Rate Bureau.

John has held an active role in the Chinese/Taiwanese-American communities since the early nineties, serving as Vice President and President of the Triangle Area Chinese American Society (TACAS).  He has served terms as vice principal and then principal for the Raleigh Chinese Languages School (RCLS). He established the North Carolina Chinese Business Association along with Mr. Ken Lee and Dr. C. C. Yang in 1990, established Sister State relationship between N.C. and Taiwan.  He was a proactive member of the Sister Cities Committee for the City of Cary, helping to establish a Sister-Cities relationship between Cary - Research Triangle Park, N. C., and Hsin-chu CityHsin-chu Industrial Park in Taiwan.  In addition, he is a N.C. representative for the Chinese American Academic and Professional Association in the Southeast United States (CAPASUS).

While many have dubbed Wei the unofficial “Chinese mayor” of the Triangle, Wei’s favorite title is “Lao,” an informal Chinese name given to a senior person who has earned respect for his accomplishments and wisdom.

In 1999, John and former NCSU Professor Hong Yang began designing a proposal for a North Carolina China Center in Raleigh.  While this project is finally taking shape, Wei still has two more dreams for the area: the first Chinese American operated bank and a “Chinatown” in the North Carolina Research Triangle Park area, which would be a commercial area from which all merchants and all Chinese residents would benefit.

John’s wife, Shue, retired from IBM and now works for N.C. State Government, John and Shue are the parents of two children, daughter Shiny who is a Managing Consultant at IBM and son, Addi, who is a sales and marketing specialist at IBM.  Shiny is married to Chris Butler, an assistant vice president at GE Capital.
